Dev D review - Emosanal Attyachar – not for the faint hearted (A):

The Background:
Nopes, writing this review was not at all there on my “to blog” list 5 mins back. Was having a conversation on the recently seen movies with a frend when she mentioned that she was writing something and I said I am yet to finish writing abt my panchgani trip, jus too bored these days to write abt anything and as an afterthought jus said that mebbe I shud write a review on dev d ..that wil get me all excited and she responded sayin that will excite everyone…n I decided to give it a shot….n a statutory warning before you go ahead…Read it at your own risk….

The Rating:
Apparently the movie had got great reviews, 5 stars which obviously meant I couldn’t miss the movie. And I have always considered Abhay Deol to be a good actor…so decided to go for it and experience the modern take on Dev D by Anurag Kashyap.

The Movie:
The basic plot sticks to the story of Devdas, with extra adult content added...So the movie has a bunch of despos who are too horny waitin to get into the bed with any1 he/she can possibly lay hands (other body parts included) on…
Dev/ Paro track:
The movie starts with a 5 min flashback and then the dirty talk between Dev and Paro with dialogues like:
Dev: Do you touch yourself? And
Dev: Tumhari ek tasveer bhejo
Paro: Hai toh tumhare paas
Dev: Bina kapdon ke…..well that pretty much sets up the tone for the entire movie…
So after seein Paros nude pic (the face loses its importance here…whoever said gud luks are important??), dev decides to come back to India, basically to have sex with Paro which is evident from the fact that as soon as he sees her, instead of starting with a hi-hello, dev tries to get all over her, but the scene gets interrupted with the entrance of Paro’s dad ..…And if you thought only Dev was horny, wait a minute…Paro packs a punch too…rather much more than a punch as explained below: …
Paro: Mera Dev aa gaya hai. Mujhe tere kamre ki chaavi de
Sunil (who is sum random naukar) : Paro, main tum se pyar karta hoon
Paro: Maine tujhe kabhi mana kiya hai kya kuch karne se…waise tu kuch kar bhi nahi sakta…Nahi chahiye teri chaavi…
All the while there is some wedding happening in the background…though I couldn’t really figure out whose wedding was it, my best guess was it was Dev’s brother’s. And in the wedding you come across another despo, Rasika (the only decent lukin chick in the movie) who is awestruck by the fact that Dev is from London where she intends to go and then takes Dev to car from where they go to a Stable to have sex, but Dev stops after smooching…though in the entire context of the movie, I couldn’t understand y did he stop…anyways he returns to the wedding and overhears Sunil (the naukar) talking dirty abt Paro…Dev goes to him and he tells Dev abt Paros extraordinary abilities in bed “ Maa-kasam, palang tod deti hai”. Dev gets up and smashes a bottle onto his head…
Meanwhile our Ms hornie, denied a key by Sunil, manages to take a mattress from her house carryin it on a bicycle all the way to the green lush fields where she sets it up and calls dev there (and the audience keep wondering y the heck did she need a key in the first place)…And as soon as Dev arrives, our heroine topples him over WWF style , removes his clothes when Dev remarks “ Wahan se haath nikaal”, and gets up, calls her a slut, slaps her and then walks out….Dev decides he doesn’t want to marry his Paro and Paro decides to marry a guy named Bhuvan (Rasika s Brother and a father of 2 kids) who had got horny when he saw Paro in the wedding…And in between al this, Dev has sex with Rasika….And then Paro-Bhuvan marriage is highlighted by Paros dance and the song Emosanal Attyachar which again is highlighted by the lyrics “Bol bol why did u ditch me whore?” No clue as to what was this song doin during the wedding…Anyways moving ahead, Paro gets married and Dev takes to drinking….
Now for Chanda’s track:
Lenne (I guess her name thou not sure) is a school gal who is goin around with some random guy who takes her to a room, shoots sum scenes and sends across to every1 via MMS (basically the MMS scandal)…Post this the school gals life is ruined and so is her family’s….Her parents take her to some remote place and as she is just about to step out of her house for a walk, her parents ask her to go in and she retorts “I am just goin out for a walk. I am not goin to suck every c**k that comes my way” And u get a glimpse of wat Lennes track is goin to be…Her parents force her inside when her Dad asks," how could u do that…I have seen that video" and she retaliates, “How could you see that video?” ..its too much for her dad and he shoots himself…And quite expectedly she ends up being a prostitute and takes the name Chanda….Till here the movie is tolerable to say the least, but beyond this u r jus waiting for the movie to end….
Dev ends up at Chandas place on 1 fine night when he asks “how old are you” and she responds “old enough to get into bed with you” then some chemistry (add physics and biology as well) develops between them with scenes like them eating momos at a dhaba, jumping into a swimming pool in the middle of a night, etc etc…also add havin cocaine together,,,,And in between all that, there is also a scene where Dev calls up Paro and asks her to come and meet him and she lands up at his house in the middle of the night and randomly starts cleaning his room and sits down to wash his clothes..Audience is just left wondering “wat in the world is happening…atleast if they would have shown Rin or Vim bar we would have understood it was an advertising gimmick,,but alas it wasn’t even that!!!!!” Dev tries to have sex with Paro and for the first tym in the movie, our miss hornie refuses and throws in sum dialogues (don recollect exact words but they were on similar lines as above)…wow!!! Ethics!!!!!!!!!!there sure was a lot of that in the movie…
But as the love story or rather the lust story between Dev-Chanda begins to develop, a customer (m using the most decent language I can) comes looking for Chanda and Dev decides to leave it at that….Then the director throws in the angle of drink and drive cases where dev runs over few ppl lyin on the footpath…he is arrested …but released on bail to perform last rites of his father…he then tries to run and all of a sudden when he was almost goin to b killed by a car, he realizes all his wrong doings, starts seacrhin for Chanda and decides to give in to the police…Not convincing at all,,,One jus fails to understand the character of Devdas in the entire movie…
The movie is torturous to say the least…and one can jus feel only relieved when it ends…

And for the characters, Abhay Deol is gud in the movie, so is Mahi (Paro) minus her looks,,,but the movie contains nothing except sex….And the movie reminded me of Life in a Metro which again revolved around sex….and at the end of it (in both movies) u lose a count of who slept with whom??.So now if at all anybody wanted to go for the movie based on the excellent reviews…think again…And if anybody has got excited reading the review, I would suggest watch a porn movie instead…btw 1 positive aspect abt the movie..the background score…twas gud….hey coming to think of it…I actually managed to finish a post in 1 go from start to end after a long tym…..hopefully next post wud b on the Panchgani trip…..

dude, i read ur review - its perfect, so i dont understand why u dont like th movie ??

u r harsh at places - likle comparing it to porn movies ...

this movie might not work in theatres, but it ll surely become a cult classic on th dvd circuit. It's a great modern take on dev d, where, yes - sex does form a major plot driver - but well - it does in life too !!!

n dev's character is very well potrayed - egoistic rich brat.

Movie explores the working of the male & female psyche very well ...

i guess - like it or hate it - u must defi watch it ...

so, amruta - plz go ...

els - music is defi rocking !!! ...

Dude... All said n done.. Emotional atyachar rocked for me!!!! N to make it blunt enuf, since this is an A rated post, What wrong did the movie show than the regular LUST filled filth all around!?

Guys ... I will like to share this fact with all... I had been to the premiere of the movie DEV D. Initially supp to be held at cinemax and for some blessed reasons shifted to Chandan. The invitation card itself was rocking. A small 2 inch by 2 inch envelope mentioning the details of the venue and timings and once u open the envelope, u see a DUREX EXTRA THIN CONDOM IN IT.... the line says, COME FALL IN LUST!!! hehehe .. the tempo was set right in the beginning....

N I think you forgot to mention the most annoying and interesting character of the story. Mr. Chunni Babu!!!! lol... the bengali (rotlu from the movie GOAL) has good though.... hehehe ... The whole theatre burst into laughing the momentthis dark guy introduces him to Abhay as Chunni... I m Chunni... ...

I think the movie can be reviewed as below....

PARO SAB KO DETI HAI, DEV D ko NAHI DETI HAI!!!! hehehe

Folks I liked the movie... though my fiancee who accompanied didnt like it at all.. I ll say its worth spending ur hard(ly) earned money for this one. If you dont like it, i dont think it will a huge disappointment that crib about.....

Dude ur lost in the haze of sex potrayed in da movie.

firstly paro and dev are childhood sweethearts ...thus the longing ...her photo is the tipping point...

secondly its a movie about DEV growing up and coming to terms with life ...

he rejects paro coz she has allegedly been sleeping around with some sunil (dometic help)...which he later find to be untrue ..(remember da scene when sunil is asking paro's dad's forgiveness).

Rasika is drawn to DEV ... dont think she wld be despo to give it ard to every tom, dick and harry.(cld be wrongon that).

when paro visits DEV in the hotel room ...it is afternoon not night ...it is clear how much she cares for him ..she wld even do his dirty laundry..it is obvious that she is looking to bed him ..but when the time comes she cannot go thru ... why ? bcoz her reality doesnt allow a flight of fantasy ...even though she puts a pillow over her head while Bhuvan mounts her ...now with DEV things are different ...she does care for him but ...

its a movie about growing up ...DEV rejects Paro ...abuses her and shows her, her place ...she does the same while leaving him...but ultimately DEV hooks up with Leni ..even though she is a CSW ...why bcoz when she is with him ..she is with him ...thats all it takes ..past - shouldn care ...

Chanda /Leni(ny)'the hooker' is at the core a young girl who falls for DEV coz even in his drunk state he sees through all the make up and glamour and mebbe get thru to her ... dont know what other chemistry is at work here ...

yup u have the MMS scandal and BMW case thrown in for making this flick current ...

but at the end of the day it is about a young spoilt and arrogant BOY ...growing up ....

so we have a devdas in the women liberation ( oh so misinterpreted 2 words)era ...

happy viewing ..

i agree with u only on one point. great background score. on rest of the counts, i would differ significantly.

it was a mad movie made by a mad person. kashyap rocked. i dont see any contemporary director (probably save vishal bharadwaj and sudhir mishra) who would have given the story such a wild interpretation and done justice to it at the same time. just loved the way o pardesi was shot.

abhay deol rocked too. just like he did in oye lucky-lucky oye (although that movie was a big maaf). he's carving out a niche for himself and picking the right kind of films.

maybe the ending could have been crisper. but it was paisa vasool. the film left me wanting for more of kashyap's work in the future..

Boss :) hardly qualifies as a review when you have reproduced the scipt more or less verbatim. I guess you should see past the obvious. I would have been peeved off if Dev and Paro did not succumb to hormones and sheer unadulterated lust after years of separation just like normal people. if anyone tried to give that a tag of undying and "pure" love instead of plain ol' lust, It'd just be another of those regular song and dance movies to come out of the Bollywood factory. Looking past all the hedonism which is the face of the movie Dev D., the movie shows Dev as the self-indulgent brat that he is rather than the true-love-thwarted-and-ends-in-self-destruction which is the theme of most movies based on S. C. Chattopadhyay's novel (the theme has been beaten to death). I guess the way it ends in says it all, Dev admits that he is a slut! The women in the movie are unapologetic about who they are and their choices in life. They don't blame anyone - their parents, their lover(s) for their state of affairs and have come to terms with their destiny. Even Lenne who is a child displays maturity beyond her age in accepting her fate and chooses to move on with her life (goes to college and works). Rasika who is obviously in love with Dev also decides that he can love only himself and writes him off. Paro attempts a last ditch effort to save Dev from himself and tries giving him what he wants so that he may regain some sanity. And then there is Dev who is like a mad pup who chooses to get run-over on the highway of live by deliberately coming under stuff like drugs, booze and self-love and whimpers in the self-inflicted torture expecting people to understand and sympathize with him.I though the perfect ending would be Dev killing himself because he has realized that it was alright as long as his madness was masochism and wants to end it when it turns out that he is a menace to the society that he lives in. Like a parasite, feeding on people's emotions.

It was good to see a lot of fresh faces in the movie and everyone's performance has packed a punch. Abhay Deol is a laid-back actor and each of his roles have been effortless thus far. He is a smart actor since he chooses roles that fit his lethargic style and his innate charm. Music was top-notch.

Advice to all men watching the movie - The sex, the stylisation, drugs and booze are to lure you to watch the movie. Move beyond the obvious, if you want to enjoy a refreshing take on a much rehashed script of the "undying love" of Devdas. Basically, GROW UP!!!

I have seen the movie.. its more real than the earlier devdas..but it explores the darker side of love unlike regular bollywood stuff.. i dont want to watch films like dev d and spoil my mood... let all critics watch it.. lets watch musical love stories that are basically larger than life and keep you mentally healthy, although in a fantasy world.. but who cares as loong as we enjoy it .....what say

Hi reviewer...and the vieweres of this reviews.
I just went through this whole thread to get an idea about what so special about this movie...and what the lyricist wanted to mean by "Emosanal Atyachaar".
Well...I didn't get a chance yet to view the movie.
But, the reviews and comments seem to be enough to get the outline crystal clear.
I was trying to search the attempt of the film maker to present a message. I think I am able to sort that out.
Misinterpreted philosophy of love had been strongly highlighted with linguistic reality. The eternally unknown and still unfound threshold between "love and "lust" had been depicted in an unpainted manner in form of a naked lie.
Its a mirror....from which the image of perversion reflected out.
Don't think, that, this love lust confusion is a new born of this generation. its was omni present through out ages.
Even Mr. Sarat Chandra Chattyopadhyay (the famous and original bengali writer of Devdas) apologised about his 3rd class creation.
Think about the real life brute who killed so many innocent and poor people for a cruel show off of so called "love". This brute "falls in love" so often that doesn't surprise me.....but surprising thing is that many girls and women dreams to live a life with such killer. That's what I think might had inspired to make a film like "DEV D".
